Some senior leaders have questioned the charging of money for the application form. A senior Congress leader from Haryana said, “This will keep people from poor backgrounds away from electoral politics… In other parties, they just conduct surveys after inviting applications.”
Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Uday Bhan, however, justified the move and said the practice has been continuing for the past three decades. “The aim is not to collect party funds but to ensure that only serious candidates come forward in the elections. Since the party is performing well and there is a strong trend in favour of the Congress, we are expecting a good number of candidates,” Uday Bhan said.
