Salem district administration allows farmers, potters to desilt 108 water bodies

The Salem district administration has identified 66 more water bodies so that farmers and potters can extract silt for agriculture and pottery making.

Earlier, 42 water bodies were identified in the first phase for farmers and potters to collect clay, silt, savudu and gravel for making pottery, domestic and agricultural purposes.

District Collector R. Vrinda Devi said that farmers and potters who are willing to extract silt and soil will have to apply online with the relevant documents at the nearest e-seva centres. The applications will be verified by the concerned revenue officials. In case of applications received for agricultural use, the information submitted by the applicant will be verified with the online data maintained by the revenue department.

In case of receipt of application from pottery artisans, it will be forwarded to the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) to verify and certify the genuineness of the applicant’s residence and pottery making unit. The verification by the VAO will be done on first come, first served basis within seven days and recommended to the tehsildar for approval, the collector said.

Stating that permission will be granted within 10 days, Ms. Vrinda Devi said that if the information provided by the applicant is satisfactory, permission for desilting of water bodies will be granted within 10 days from the date of receipt of the application by the local authority. The Collector said that after getting the permission, the beneficiaries should contact the water body officer and remove the desilt and soil in the area specified by the officer.
