Over $3 million in support for Canberrans through Equity Fund

Released on 04/07/2024

The ACT Government has now provided more than $3 million in financial support to Canberra families in 2024 through the Future Education Equity Fund.

Since opening in January, the Equity Fund has provided support to more than 5,000 Canberra students.

As announced in the 2024-25 ACT Budget, the ACT Government is now also providing an additional $1 million boost to the Equity Fund for the 2024 school year.

The Future of Education Equity Fund helps give ACT students from eligible families access to everyday essentials to support their education and wellbeing, such as book packs, uniforms and excursions, sports equipment and activities, tutoring and music lessons.

It provides assistance to economically disadvantaged families whose students are enrolled in preschool through 12th grade at any ACT school.

The payments are as follows:

  • $400 for preschool students
  • $500 for elementary school students
  • $750 for high school and college students

Minister for Education and Youth Yvette Berry said the Equity Fund has provided thousands of Canberra students and families in need with the financial support they need to purchase goods and services to fully pursue their education, and further increases in available funding will allow even more families to apply.

“Canberrans are facing difficult times right now with cost of living pressures, and the Equity Fund is helping to ease this pressure on families,” Minister Berry said.

“We know how important education is, so we want to ensure all of our students have an equal opportunity to fully engage with their schooling.

“The additional support available through the Boost to Equity Fund announced in the Budget will allow us to assist more students and their families with a range of school expenses, including items or activities to enrich their education.

“Importantly, this additional funding will help us further improve equity and access – which are central tenets of the ACT Government’s Future of Education strategy.”

Applications for the 2024 school year are open until November 29, 2024. Information about the fund and a link to apply online is available here. www.education.act.gov.au/support-for-our-students/financial-and-resource-assistance-for-families,
