About SSC Stenographer Exam:

Staff Selection Commission every year conducts Stenographer Exam for Grade C and D posts. It is to be noted that the vacancies of Stenographer Grade “C” and Stenographer Grade “D” are in the Ministries/Departments of the Central Government including their attached/subordinate offices located in the States and Union Territories all over the country. 12th / Intermediate Passed Candidates Filled the Form and Participate in the Exam.

As the competition gets tougher, hence the need for a smart study plan. Merit has also started going up. So candidates need to work hard and prepare well for the exam. So in this article we discuss how to prepare for SSC Stenographer Exam, which topics should be given more attention, which topics should be given less time.

SSC Stenographer Selection Process:-

SSC Stenographer Grade C & D Exam selection process is quite simple. The first stage is the All India written test and the second stage is the Typing Test / Stenography Test, Candidates have to qualify each stage for selection to the post of Stenographer in various government departments. Candidates need to do marking and focused preparation for this exam.

SSC Steno Exam Pattern:-

SSC Stenographer exam is of total 200 marks and total time duration for this exam is 2 hours.

  • there are 50 questions From each subject:- (i) General Intelligence & Reasoning (ii) General Awareness. Each question is of 1 mark.
  • There will be 100 questions from the English language part.
  • Each part is of equal importance so candidates have to focus on each and every part of this exam.
  • It should be noted by the candidates that there is Negative Marking of 0.25 Marks in this exam. So the scheme of the exam is according to the pattern and syllabus of SSC.
  • Remember there is no section wise cut off in this exam.

Section-Wise Analysis/Tips for Stenographer Exam 2022

(I) General Intelligence and Reasoning :- The General Intelligence and Reasoning part is a very important aspect of this exam. You can score more than 40 marks in this section.

  • This section is very scoring so candidates need to pay more attention to this part.
  • Reasoning section is all about practice. The harder you work at home, the less time you will get in this section.
  • There is a fixed set of questions asked by SSC. So there is a need to practice previous year papers to score 45+ marks in this section.
  • More marks in this section increases your chances of selection.
  • Reasoning questions in SSC exams take less time as compared to Aptitude questions.
  • This part plays an important role in deciding the eligibility of the candidates. The marks of the candidates also depend on this section.
  • Candidates need to focus and practice on Non Verbal Reasoning.

Topics worth noting :- Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Direction Sense Test, Problem Solving, Symbolic/Number Classification, Arithmetic Reasoning, Semantic Series, Figurative Patterns – Folding and Completion, Number Series, Coding and De-coding, Problem Solving .

(Second) general awareness:- This is the segment that is always in the zone of uncertainty. In the paper section of this section SSC has the freedom to choose any topic and ask any type of questions related to the subjects as General Awareness covers the broad syllabus.

  • It must be noted that general awareness is not a one day affair. This section requires continuous learning and focus.
  • After learning the topic, there is a need to give enough quizzes of all the subjects.
  • In recent times SSC has asked many questions from General Science section. So candidates can focus on more study of General Science.
  • Candidates can cover the syllabus as per their strength as questions from History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Current Affairs are to be asked in this section.
  • In SSC exams, candidates can be given relaxation on topics related to current affairs as fewer questions are asked from current affairs in this exam.
  • Candidates are advised to opt for those questions on which you have full confidence. Wrong answers weaken your chances of scoring more.

(III) English language :- Another important and scoring part of SSC exam is General English. English section has lion’s share in stenographer exam. The English exam consists of 100 marks.

  • Candidates need to cover all the topics of English language.
  • Since there are 100 questions, SSC can ask from any subject.
  • Candidates have to first prepare for those subjects in which they can score full marks. These topics are sentence rearrangement, comprehension, active and passive voice, direct indirect, misspelled words, cloze test.
  • Candidates will have to give quiz, mock test. Exercise as much as possible.
  • Candidates need to focus on errors, sentence correction questions.

Topics worth noting:- Spot the error, Fill in the blanks, Detection of spelled/misspelled words, Idioms and phrases, Active passive voice, Direct and indirect speech, One word substitution, Close passage, Comprehension passage.

Skill Test in Shorthand:

For the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English/Hindi at the speed of 100 words per minute and for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘D’ at the speed of 80 words per minute. The case will have to be transcribed on the computer itself. Transcription will be evaluated electronically only. Transcription timing is as follows:-

For Stenographer Grade ‘D’:
50 Minutes (English)
65 Minutes (Hindi)

For Stenographer Grade ‘C’:
40 Minutes (English)
55 Minutes (Hindi)

Tips to crack SSC Steno Exam:

To crack SSC exam candidates need to follow the following tips:-

  • Focus on your goal, regular reading and selection oriented preparation is what helps you to crack this exam.
  • Study subject wise. Take one topic at a time and practice more questions on that topic to make it your strength in the exam.
  • After reading all the syllabus. Give yourself time to revise the important topics related to the exam. In the revision process, focus more on the topic which is your weakness. Pay less attention to the topic which you have prepared well.
  • Mock Test:- After completing the syllabus, give mock tests with honesty and time duration of 2 hours. It helps guide you towards your weak points. Focus on your weak points in the last five days.
  • Make strategy according to your preparation in the exam hall. Take the section which is your strength and less time consuming. Keep time in mind while solving questions.
  • Before filling your choices on the OMR sheet, give a final thought to the questions and double-check your answers.
